The iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max arrived with the iPhone 11 in early September 2019. They share some features with the third non-Pro model. But precisely, to stand out from the latter, they promise a more professional use. But what does that mean?

For these new iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max, Apple has focused on photography and autonomy – obviously adding power through the update of its chip. If no great novelty is to be met (we just regret that the brand has finally overlooked the reverse charging), the iPhone 11 Pro still strengthen their position on the high end.

Design of the iPhone 11 Pro

Size and performance of the screen

To start our opinion on the iPhone 11 Pro, let us first look at the screen of this new phone. Here, we do not see much difference from the previous model since it is a very beautiful OLED screen that measures 5.8 inches diagonally – the same dimensions as its predecessor. In terms of definition, we find the classics 2436 x 1125 px.

Note that Apple has chosen to keep the small horizontal notch located on the upper part of the screen to hide the photo selfie sensor, the face recognition sensor and the speaker. The American giant has decided not to engage in the race to “screen to body” ratio with the giants Huawei, OnePlus or Samsung who compete ingenuity to increase the surface of the screen (photo sensor that pop-up, bubble circular…).

Without going into the comparisons in too much detail, the iPhone 11 Pro Max also has an OLED screen (6.5 inches) while the iPhone 11 basic version is satisfied with the LCD. Apple, however, expected that the future generation of its phones (in 2020) will completely abandon the LCD technology to focus on the very premium OLED.

Colors of the iPhone 11 Pro

Apple remains faithful to the colors that are dear to its smartest high-end, adding however a small novelty this year. Thus, the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max both come in the historic colors of the brand to the apple: gold, silver and sidereal gray – and just added the night green. The latter is probably the most popular of the moment.

If the design does not change almost compared to previous editions, we will still appreciate the glass (Gorilla Glass 5) resistant to the front and back that gives a very high end product. The edges of the phone are always made of stainless steel, which reinforces the structure in case of shocks. We will also appreciate the level of the finish around the photo sensors on the back of the screen, it’s impressive.

In terms of the design of this iPhone 11 Pro, the only two real differences that can be observed are at the back of the device: first, we now find a triple photo sensor and a flash in a space square top left on the back of the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max. The previous model (XS) was more discreet since it aligned vertically the two photo sensors and the flash.

Second point that differs slightly from the previous model, the new generation of iPhone 11 (11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max) see the Apple logo down a few millimeters to position in the middle of the back of the device. This is related to the location for the photo sensors that takes a more prominent place, which forced the firm to lower a little logo to maintain consistency. Let’s move now in our opinion iPhone 11 Pro to the weight of these two phones.

Technical specifications of the iPhone 11 Pro

Performance of the A13 Bionic chip

While many competitors are asking Qualcomm for their chip, Apple has been working for years with TSMC to develop its processors. The new A13 Bionic chip found in the iPhone 11 Pro (as in the other two models in the range) is even more powerful. In its presentation, Apple praised the merits of its new processor – both CPU and GPU – which is positioned far ahead of all competitors in the market. For gamers, the generation of iPhone 11 Pro is the ultimate dream.

Always made in 7 nm, it is compatible with Wi-Fi 6 but there is still no compatibility 5G. While some competing brands like OnePlus have formalized smartphones compatible with 5G technology, Apple has chosen to leave it out because of low adoption in its main markets. For example, French telecom operators have not planned to market it before 2020.

If the chip A13 Bionic integrated in the new generation of phones is not visible (although it brings a colossal power gain), a significant and visible novelty is none other than the additional photo sensor that we see in the back of this new range of iPhone. This is what we will see later in our opinion on the iPhone 11 Pro.

Camera and image processing

While the competition is always more on the camera, Apple was expected at the turn. If his rival Samsung is already relying on a combo of 4 photo sensors on the back of his phone, the brand has decided to add an apple this year – to get to three. This is the case for the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, while the basic iPhone 11 version has only two.

In terms of the similarities of the photo sensors with the previous models, the iPhone 11 Pro comes equipped with a main photo sensor wide-angle (f / 1.8) and a sensor with telephoto (f / 2.4, zoom 2x hybrid). These two “historic” sensors present on these new iPhone make 12 MPx. To this, we discover in this new generation of premium phones a third sensor of 12 MPx too, with an ultra-wide angle lens. The latter is available for both photo and video.

As Apple explained in its conference, it’s about allowing users to take pictures at an angle up to 120 degrees, making it easier to take landscapes or photos in small spaces. Apple has really made an extra effort on the photo for these new iPhone 11 Pro, and it is widely appreciated. It adds a number of very useful modes (such as night mode, or an improved portrait mode) that respond to real needs.

Waterproof the iPhone 11 Pro

It is now the second generation of smartphones from the Apple manufacturer that is IP68 certified. In other words, this iPhone 11 Pro is resistant to water and dust – two standards that are now found in most high-end manufacturers. In other words, a new iPhone 11 Pro can stay up to 30 minutes under water by 2 meters deep.

Apple had confirmed in an original way last year that its iPhone XS was resistant to salt water (sea), beer or wine. Obviously, this is also the case for these new iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max. However, care must be taken as this type of damage may involve higher repair costs in some cases. Let’s see a critical point in our opinion on the iPhone 11 Pro: autonomy and battery.

Autonomy and reverse charge

Apple does not usually communicate precisely on the battery of its phones, and this is again the case. He just announced that the iPhone 11 Pro lasted 1 hour longer than the iPhone XS, and the iPhone 11 Pro Max lasted up to 5 hours longer than the iPhone XS Max. While the previous models were already known for their robustness from this point of view, we can only appreciate this news.

Beyond the fact that Apple has probably increased the capacity of its batteries, it should also be noted that the new chip A13 Bionic has largely contributed to increase the performance of the battery. However, we may regret that Apple has finally not added the reverse charge on its new generation of phones – as rumors had predicted.

Small consolation, Apple has decided to equip the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max 18W charger – while it was limited for a long time to include a low 5W charger in its boxes. This is still the case for the iPhone 11, which remains the least expensive model of the group.
